CRE8 sat down with Paul Michael Montelongo

Digital Artist / Creating a balance between Distress & Beauty / Creator of UrksDesign

1. Introduce yourself

My name is Paul Michael Montelongo, aka Urks - I’m a digital artist, Husband and father of 3. I enjoy watching movies, sci-fi or fantasy mostly. I do pick-up a book on occasion, reading directions counts too right? I enjoy getting lost in the surroundings, whether it be the mountains or city. I’m a people person, I enjoy making others laugh and feel comfortable and willing to help when needed.

2. What kind of art do you do?

I’m a digital artist creating pieces using Photography, Photoshop and Acrylics. My style is Distress & Beauty, I do my best in finding the right balance that complements the two. Each piece I create is Inspired or set by a theme.

3. What are the things you're most proud of/grateful for?

The most grateful thing I have is family, not just my own tiny unit, but as a whole. I know that’s rare and I’m thankful I have family that cares about me, especially with my passion for art. My siblings are there when I need them and even my Aunts act as a mother sometimes. I still hold onto the wisdom a few of my uncles have given me and I can honestly say I’m the man I am because of my parents.

4. What seems to be your biggest struggle being an artist?

The biggest struggle is knowing my worth and value. My wife has been a huge encourager with my art and is the main reason I started, she pushed me 3 years ago to take that leap and create for myself. I still feel it sometimes, but I have to remind myself why I’m doing it.

5. How do you override these struggles?

I remind myself that I’ve come a long way, and the small interactions usually have big impacts when we don even know it. I love hearing or reading about people that felt the same as myself and see the success they achieved and know I’m not alone.

6. What are you currently working on?

I’m currently working on shooting new faces that aren’t family for a series I’m working on titled “ Speak” - Not saying too much, it’s inspired by not staying quiet and the noise you have can be heard even through your actions or even a glance. You can speak even when the words don’t come out.

7. What is you're Mission as an artist?

I want to encourage and inspire. My art style isn’t for everyone but it still makes those people stop and give a second look and rethink of the idea or something Broken can be something beautiful and interesting.
